After the gloomy memorial, the formerly pampered 1929 characters mourn the loss of Aryl Sullivan. Claire, now a pregnant widow, is too devastated to cope and withdraws from the group, delving into a deep depression. Caleb drowns his own sorrow in a bottle of whiskey, and Jonathan becomes obsessed with finding the true cause for the boat’s explosion. And Ava anxiously awaits the birth of their child.

As the family and friends come to grips with Aryl’s death, the struggle to survive both emotionally and financially strains everyone in different ways.

So it’s up to Maura to see them past the worst of it, but she faces setbacks of her own when complications arise in her pregnancy. The new sheriff, Marvin, is working both sides of the law and takes advantage of Caleb’s state, getting him involved in bootlegging that threatens the business and his family. A concerned Patrick tries to help him, but stubborn as a mule, Caleb won’t listen.

But the gears of life slowly start to move again, and new friends are made and old enemies return. Claire finds refuge in Gordon, a widower, and the two find a common bond, finally allowing her to move on and accept her new life.

Until she’s met with a shocking surprise.

I would give her 1/2 a star. this woman really needs to do some home work on her work. a few of her errors 1 Lobster boats do not have Sails .2 If the baby is born the first of Nov. but on the first of Dec. she is 3 months do we have a month I never knew of?/3 If Jonathan is holding the baby on his shoulder patting her back and rubbing Ava's shoulder ,who's holding the baby to Jonathan's shoulder,Who takes the time to proof read her books??

She rambles on so much that you can skip half of the pages and not miss much of anything. Needless to say I have no interest in reading any thing more by this writer .It took her 6 books to tell a story that could have been told in 2 3 tops. and I will not be reading her last books.

1930 Book Three The 1929 Series 3 edition by ML Gardner Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews

There are so many annoying grammar and linguistic mistakes, it's rough reading. I hate having to reread sentences two or more times in order to MAKE them make sense. I wonder if Gardner is interested in the 20 or so glaring errors I bookmarked while reading. I'll send them to her and see. Otherwise, my opinion of this book in the series is more or less like many of the other reviews...a bit plodding, repetitious...yet...I did have the sense that what happens near the end was going to happen, was glad it finally did, and then was abruptly left hanging again...you pretty much have to order the next book if you want to see the latest dire mess straightened out. I'm not sure if I want to recommend it or not...it depends on the reader. It's certainly soap opera-ish, and that can be a pleasant diversion at time. But I'd much rather order another book in a series because the story and writing are so excellent...not because I just can't stand no knowing what happens next.
The story is fairly interesting and the writing is straight forward. It follows the trials and tribulations of close a knit Irish clan in America during the depression. However, be prepared for a cliff hanger ending to coerce you into the next book. I hate that trick! I didn't pay attention to the fact that this is the 3rd book in a series, especially since it starts out a bit like a stand-alone.
No worries I won't write a third grade level book report, and I won't reveal anything. This book had no redeeming qualities. The writing was ordinary. The plot was mostly predictable, including the supposed major plot twists. The things that weren't predictable were not surprising. The characters were stereotypes of different categories of people the diva, the wife, the mother, the caretaker, etc. I didn't care about any of them. I had quite a few 'Oh give me a break moments'. I hate soap operas and have never watched more than five minutes of one. This book can best be described as a soap opera. The 'historical' aspects of this book do not go beyond Wikipedia *shudder* content. I like to learn and to be challenged by the books I read. This book didn't even come close.
This is not a stand alone novel. I'm sorry I read it. For me, it was akin to watching a train wreck - what other ridiculous thing would happen next. I will not read another book by this author.
The book held my interest quite well, but I give it one star because of the ending.
It left so much dangling.....I was thoroughly disgusted!
This book was strange because it raised so many questions and added so many characters and then it didn't answer any questions at all! The end just left you hanging and wondering. It was like falling asleep the last 20 minutes of a movie - you're left with so many questions that you'll never know the answers to. For that reason, I feel like I've been ripped off.

Even worse than that, I had finished another book in this series that ended the same way - more of a non-ending - so I took a chance and read the next one thinking it would at least answer the question I had from the one before it. But no! It left me with more!

I felt like Charlie Brown trying to kick the darn football. The author tricked me once, then she tricked me twice so now I'm done. I'll never read anything else by M.L. Gardner because her books don't give any answers.

There are things that could have been interesting if she had followed through but it's like she went off on these tangents that you think there's a reason for but the book ends and there was never any reason for all the things that made you curious where she was going with this or that.

Of all the Charlie Browns, this was the Charlie Browniest.
This book starts out slow and a lot of characters are thrown at the reader without a. lot of explanation. Then the author has the characters speaking partially into ye's and yer's while also using you's and your's in the same sentences. Apparently this was supposed to be a murder mystery but there really is no mystery. Then the story abruptly ends with no resolution to any of the issues. A very disappointing book. Not worth reading.
I've read the previous two books in this series. The first book was pretty good, I really disliked the second one, and I didn't like the way this book was written.

If you've not read book one, you'll be thrown into this book with no background. If you make it to the end, you'll feel the book stops abruptly. Meaning you'll have to get the next book. I might have liked this "series" better as one lengthy, well-edited novel. Yes, I knew it was a series but just not well done.

Characters Aryl, Jonathan and Caleb, along with their families, are still surviving the effects of the Depression, but aren't holding my interest.
